Paper Round: New twist in Mats Hummels saga

Paper Round: New twist in Mats Hummels saga

Paper Round: New twist in Mats Hummels saga

With four Premier League teams interested in Mats Hummels, the defender has been forced to speak about his future, plus the rest of the day's news.

Hummels blow for Premier League teams: Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has reiterated his desire to stay at Signal Iduna Park, seemingly putting to bed any chances of him joining a Premier League team, according to the Daily Star. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in recent months, but the centre-half has dealt the Premier League managers a blow by insisting that he is happy playing for a struggling Dortmund. "Fundamentally, I don't need to play in the Champions League to be happy. Maybe we indeed lose players should we not qualify for Champions League, but what I can already tell you is that should we not lose 15 players at once, we'll still have a super team next season,” Hummels said.

Paper round’s view: In what has been one of the more tiresome transfer sagas in recent years, Paper Round will breathe a sigh of relief when this is finally put to bed – one way or the other. Despite Dortmund languishing in the Bundesliga’s bottom three, Hummels refuses to give anything away regarding his future despite intense speculation linking him with a move away from the Westfalonstadion. The World Cup winner’s presence in the Premier League would be a huge treat, but his reluctance to leave Dortmund may see fans of English football left disappointed.

United slap £50m price tag on De Gea: Manchester United have placed a world-record £50 million valuation on goalkeeper David De Gea in a big to fend off Real Madrid’s growing interest, according to the Express. As well as fending off the interest of the Spanish giants, United manager Louis van Gaal is also keen on tying down De Gea to an extended contract at Old Trafford and will reportedly offer the stopper a £200,000-per-week, five-year deal worth around £52m. The Express claim that, whilst De Gea is United’s top priority, the keeper is likely to wait until the summer to decide on his long-term future.

Paper round’s view: Madrid-born De Gea claims that he is happy at Old Trafford amid a reports linking him with a move to the Spanish capital. Real Madrid’s current No. 1, Iker Casillas, is coming to the end of his career and it is expected that De Gea will replace his compatriot in between the sticks at the Santiago Bernabeu – whenever that may be. If De Gea rejects a deal that will surely be put to him in the summer, United will need to cash in on the 24-year-old, whose contract expires in 2016.

Leverkusen to offer Soldado Spurs escape: Tottenham Hotspur flop Roberto Soldado looks set to be offered a way out of his White Hart Lane nightmare with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly interested in securing his signature, according to the Mirror. The Spaniard has struggled in north London since his move in the summer of 2013. “The Germans have lined up the misfiring Spaniard - a huge flop since his £26million move from Valencia 18 months ago - as a replacement for their own forward, Josip Drmic, who wants to leave,” the report says. Paper round’s view: Soldado has really struggled to replicate anything like the form he displayed during his time with Valencia, and seems to be suffering a crisis of form and confidence for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The 29-year-old has netted just 15 goals for Spurs during his tie at White Hart Lane – and just four this season. Soldado’s last goal came seven games ago and after two successive horror performances, which included a quite unbelievable miss from point-blank range against Burnley, the Spaniard may look for a move to reignite his career.

Paper Round: New twist in Mats Hummels saga

United want Pique return after Savic snub: Manchester United are set to step up their interest in Barcelona’s Gerard Pique after failing to sign Fiorentina’s Stefan Savic, report the Express. Louis van Gaal’s United – along with Tottenham – were linked with a move for former Man City defender Savic over the summer and were reportedly set to renew their interest before the winter transfer window closes. But, according to the Express, the Montenegro international has quashed any possibility of him leaving the Serie A side by signing a new deal. And now, United boss Van Gaal is preparing a £15m bid to bring Pique back to United. Paper round’s view: After a nightmare first stint in England in which he flopped at the Etihad Stadium, Savic may be right to turn down the chance of an England return and stay in Italy where he has quickly become a hit with the Fiorentina faithful. Gerard Pique, however, has worked his way back into the Barcelona starting XI after an early-season exile. The Spaniard’s long-term future at the Camp Nou is uncertain so the defender could be interested in a move back to the Premier League and to play for a manager whom he’s dealt with on two separate occasions in the past.

Ruthless Algeria storm back as South Africa pay penalty

Ruthless Algeria storm back as South Africa pay penalty

Ruthless Algeria storm back as South Africa pay penalty

African Cup of Nations, Estadio de Mongomo - Algeria 3 (Hlatshwayo 67 (og), Ghoulam 72, Slimani 83) South Africa 1 (Phala 51).
South Africa were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal as Algeria scored three times in the final 23 minutes to secure a victory that takes them top of Group C. Following a goalless first 45 minutes, South Africa deservedly took the lead six minutes into the second as Thuso Phala scored after good work from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Tokelo Rantie. The latter then had the chance to make it two from the penalty spot, after Aissa Mandi brought down Vilakazi, but the Bournemouth striker hit the bar. Algeria’s route back into the game was fortuitous as Thulani Hlatshwayo headed into his own net from Yacine Brahimi's cross, but they took full advantage of their good fortune. With indecision suddenly setting in to the Bafana Bafana’s play full-back Faouzi Ghoulam smashed Algeria in front, before Islam Slimani profited from some woeful goalkeeping from Darren Keet to make it three.

Ruthless Algeria storm back as South Africa pay penalty

KEY MOMENTS

8’ – CHANCE FOR ALGERIA – Sofiane Feghouli whips in a free kick that Carl Medjani meets with a flicked header that Darren Keet gathers at the second attempt.

23’ – SOUTH AFRICA HIT THE BAR – Good work from Tokelo Rantie, who squares the ball for Furman to smack a dipping shot against the woodwork from 20 yards.

28’ – OUCH – Bafana Bafana defender, Rivaldo Coetzee, has to be stretchered off having gone down on halfway. Siyabonga Nhlapo comes on.

43’ – CHANCES FOR SOUTH AFRICA – M’Bohli is called into action twice in a minute to foil Vilakazi and Jali. The keeper comes off his line to rob the ball from the former before standing tall to deny the latter from six yards.

51' – GOAL FOR SOUTH AFRICA – A lovely move from the men in yellow ends with a back-heel from Rantie to Vilakazi, who in turn squares for Phala to side-foot home.

54' – PENALTY FOR SOUTH AFRICA – Vilakuzi is brought crashing to the ground by Mandi inside the penalty area. Referee Noumandiez Doue points to the spot, but Rantie smacks his spot kick against the bar.

67' – GOAL FOR ALGERIA! – Hlatshwayo gifts Algeria a route back into the game as he glances Brahimi's cross past his own keeper.

72' – GOAL FOR ALGERIA – Ghoulam strides forward, lashes a shot past Keet and suddenly Algeria are in front. 83' – SLIMANI SEALS IT – Algeria's big guns had not fired but Slimani is gifted his first goal of the tournament as Keet allows the ball to squirm under him. KEY STATS Algeria's stunning comeback means they won their opening AFCON group game for the first time since they won the tournament in 1990. Omen? Defeat was South Africa's sixth in their last 13 games, having drawn the same number and won just one. TALKING POINT Much for Algeria to ponder. Their late, late show in Mongomo has papered over the cracks, but for 67 minutes those cracks were laid bare by an energetic and organised South Africa side. Algeria's star turns such as Feghouli or Brahimi, or even goalscorer Slimani did very little and found it difficult to break down their resolute opponents. At times Algeria gave the impression they believed all they had to do to win was turn. Importantly for the Desert Warriors, they got the win and now top Group C. They will need to be much better if they are to qualify though.

MAN OF THE MATCH Faouzi Ghoulam (Algeria): Was a constant threat down Algeria's left, and unlike some of his team-mates did not stop running. He created the chance that led to his goal all on his own and finished it expertly.

Manchester City 'close in on £30m Wilfried Bony deal'

Manchester City 'close in on £30m Wilfried Bony deal'

Manchester City 'close in on £30m Wilfried Bony deal'

Manchester City are reportedly closing in on a deal worth in the region of £30 million for Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony.
The Ivory Coast international, who will represent his country at the upcoming African Cup of Nations, was expected to be one of the first players targeted following the opening of the transfer window. And City have made their move, according to multiple reports, holding discussions with Swansea regarding a deal for the 26-year-old. The BBC says the two clubs are in “advanced talks” and that a figure in excess of £30m will be required to sign Bony, who joined Swansea for £12m in the summer of 2013.

Sky Sports put the transfer fee at £30m while reporting “the two sides are not far apart on their valuation of the 26-year-old.” A deal will not be formalised before Bony returns from Equatorial Guinea but it seems increasingly likely he will join an already deadly City attack for the second half of the season.

WHAT MANUEL PELLEGRINI SAID Speaking during a press conference on New Year's Eve: "I think that is just one of the 20 or 30 names I have read from the beginning of the season until today that we are (supposedly) interested in. I don't think we are going to be too busy in this window. We have restrictions about the amount of money and about the number of players we can put in the Champions League, so I don't think it will be a special transfer window for our team."

OUR VIEW You can’t argue with the fact Bony was the highest scorer of the calendar year and he has impressed on a weekly basis for a weaker team. He guarantees goals; the only question is whether he is ready to join a rotation system as both Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko are key players for City as well. £30m feels like rather a lot but his record is extremely good and at 26 he has plenty left in the tank.

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Fernando Torres set for debut

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Fernando Torres set for debut

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Fernando Torres set for debut

Fernando Torres has said there is more satisfaction in winning the 'Atletico Madrid way' ahead of his second debut against Real Madrid.
The ex-Liverpool and Chelsea striker, 30, has rejoined the Spanish champions from AC Milan on loan seven-and-a-half-years after leaving for Anfield.

"It is a team that has won defending their values and have always taught me that," he told the club website.
"With hard work, sacrifice, believing in what you do you can achieve things."
The Spain forward was paraded in front of 45,000 fans at Vicente Calderon Stadium on Sunday and is likely to be involved in the last-16 Copa del Rey first leg against city rivals Real on Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Fernando Torres set for debut

He scored 84 goals in 214 league appearances for Los Rojiblancos from 2001-2007, before spells at Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan in a career that has brought him success in the Champions League, FA Cup, World Cup and European Championship.
"It is not only about winning, it is about winning in a particular way," said Torres after signing on loan until the end of the season.
"Although you're competing at a disadvantage in many aspects, it can be compensated with hard work, with effort and that is what this club and team represent.
"I have found a path which has given me great satisfaction, but something seemed to be missing. This reunion closes a circle that started when I was just 10 years old wearing this shirt and now I hope to enjoy it.

"All this love becomes an extra responsibility for me, which I gladly accept."

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Fernando Torres set for debut

Copa del Rey holders Real saw their club-record 22-match winning run ended with a shock defeat at Valencia on Sunday but boss Carlo Ancelotti believes the La Liga leaders will respond in the right way.
"We're focused on the match at the Calderon," he told Real Madrid's website.  "We maintain the same fighting spirit and desire to continue to do well.
"Without playing, Torres has already brought a lot of enthusiasm to the supporters. He has experience, quality and he's going to be motivated and raring to do well."
Atletico are a point behind their Madrid rivals in La Liga but are unbeaten in three matches against them since losing the Champions League final last season.

Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Cagliari thrashed on Gianfranco Zola's debut

Gianfranca Zola's Serie A coaching career got off to a miserable start when his Cagliari side were thumped 5-0 at Palermo on Tuesday.
Germany forward Mario Gomez missed a penalty and Fiorentina had two men sent off in a 1-0 defeat at bottom club Parma while a spectacular goal by Simone Zaza, who met a corner with a full-blooded volley, gave Sassuolo a shock 2-1 win at AC Milan. AS Roma kept up their title challenge with a 1-0 win at Udinese, although the hosts claimed that Davide Astori's header never crossed the line after it bounced down off the crossbar.

Zola, who replaced Zdenen Zeman after an eight-match winless run, barely had time to settle into his seat before Michel Morganella and Ezequiel Munoz put the Sicilians 2-0 ahead. Cagliari then had Daniele Conti sent off for a second bookable offence in the 26th minute before Paulo Dybala made it 3-0 with a penalty just after the half hour. Dybala and Edgar Barreto completed the rout after halftime, leaving Cagliari (12 points) firmly entrenched in the relegation zone. Palermo (25 points) are joint eighth with Milan. Andrea Costa gave Parma an early lead with a close-range header before Gomez, plagued by injury since his move to Fiorentina, saw a weak penalty saved by Antonio Mirante in the 33rd minute. The visitors had Gonzalo Rodriguez and Stefan Savic sent off in the last 15 minutes.

Paper Round: Manchester City on Lionel Messi alert

Paper Round: Manchester City on Lionel Messi alert

Manchester City are the latest club to be linked with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, Liverpool are set to lose out on Xherdan Shaqiri and the rest of the transfer gossip from today’s papers.
City on Messi alert: Manchester City are the latest club to be linked with an audacious move for Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. Rumours linking Messi with Chelsea began circulating on Monday night after the Argentina forward started following the West London club having failed to turn up for training. And now the Manchester Evening News reports that “City could step up their ambitious attempt to sign Lionel Messi after Barcelona sacked technical director Andoni Zubizarreta.”

Paper Round’s view: Although this seems completely crazy, it perhaps isn’t so far-fetched as the rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to Manchester United. Barca recently sacked technical director Antonio Zubizarreta, Carlos Puyol resigned as a consequence and Luis Enrique did bench Messi against Real Sociedad. It hints at turmoil within the club. But Messi follows both Chelsea and Man City on Instagram and Barca really can’t afford to lose their star player with their transfer suspension.

Bony targets Champions League: Although a move for Lionel Messi is somewhat of a long shot to say the least, The Daily Telegraph reports that Manchester City could well be the next destination for Swansea’s in-demand striker Wilfried Bony. The paper’s Matt Law reports that City “have made inquiries about how much it would cost to sign Bony this month as they assess their striker options. Real Madrid have also expressed a tentative interest in Bony and the Ivory Coast international is aware that he is in demand.”

Paper Round’s view: Although City’s current injury troubles up front are well documented, this one seems unlikely. Bony recently signed a contract extension before Christmas which means that City would have to fork out in excess of £30 million. Bony is soon to leave for African Nations Cup duty but the fact that Swansea signed Portuguese striker Nelson Oliveira on loan from Benfica means they may accept a silly bid for the striker.

Liverpool to lose out on Shaqiri: Having been rocked by the recent news that captain and talisman Steven Gerrard will leave the club for a likely move to the MLS at the end of the season, Liverpool are also set to miss out on Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri. That’s the latest news coming out of Talksport, who report that Inter Milan have won the battle for his signature. “Shaqiri will join Inter on loan during the January transfer window with a view to making the move permanent at the end of the season for a fee in the region of £12m,” says Talksport via Sportitalia.

Paper Round’s view: Although Shaqiri has failed to command a regular spot at Bayern, it’s hardly a huge surprise given the strength in depth of the Bundesliga giants. But Inter are likely to give Shaqiri the chance of a regular starting spot to fight for domestic and European titles, which is something that a Liverpool side on the wane can’t guarantee.

Saints face competition from United for Indi: Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is to step up his pursuit of Porto defender Bruno Martins Indi, according to the Daily Mail. Koeman was interested in signing Indi in the summer but he may face stiff competition from Manchester United as the paper revealed that “the 22-year-old admitted he continues to think about working with Van Gaal - the former Holland boss.” Indi is quoted as saying, 'Spiritually I still have contact with Van Gaal,' he said. 'I think about him and I think he also thinks about me.'

Paper Round’s view: It sounds as if a move to Manchester United would certainly be the defender’s preferred choice, given what he has said. That, allied to United’s need for a versatile defender given their current predicament makes Old Trafford the more likely destination.

Carles Puyol resigns from Barcelona post as Camp Nou chaos continues

Carles Puyol resigns from Barcelona post as Camp Nou chaos continues

Andoni Zubizarreta has been fired as Barcelona's director of football and assistant Carles Puyol has resigned.
Zubizarreta, who kept goal for Barcelona between 1986 and 1994, returned to the club in July 2010 to take up the role from which he has now been fired. A club statement read: "The FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has decided to terminate as of today the contract of the club’s director of football, Andoni Zubizarreta.

"The president, in the name of the club, thanks Andoni Zubizarreta for his contribution, dedication and professionalism over the last four years in his role at the head of the club’s football area." Within hours, Puyol - who had been assisting Zubizarreta since retiring as a player last year - announced on Facebook that he has resigned.

Spanish daily Marca reported three days ago that Zubizarreta's days were numbered at Camp Nou after president Bartomeu lost faith in his abilities and started the search for a replacement. Barcelona's transfer ban for 2015 could be seen as a contributing factor, but concerns over the squad built by Barca and the quality of some recent signings have also been cited as reasons for Bartomeu's decision to wield the axe.

Marca highlighted Zubizarreta's failure to solve the club's impending right-back problem with Dani Alves possibly leaving the club and replacement Douglas looking unconvincing - while the fact that summer signing Thomas Vermaelen hasn't played a game due to long-term injury has also been held against the former keeper. On Sunday Zubizarreta had spoke out about the transfer ban, which was imposed for breaching rules on the signing of youth players: "As the director of football, I assume full accountability for my responsibilities. Mr Bartomeu is the one who knows the situation better than anyone, as he was the sporting vice-president during that time. My position is always the club’s decision."

THE VIEW FROM SPAIN - A TACTICAL MOVE BY BARTOMEU Adrian Garcia, Eurosport Spain: "In Zubizarreta's interview yesterday he spoke against president Bartomeu, regarding the FIFA ban. In our opinion, sacking him is a strategic move by president Bartomeu. He could save his presidency with this decision. Bad transfers are another issue, especially Vermaelen this season."

Real Madrid's run comes to an end as Valencia triumph in La Liga

Real Madrid's run comes to an end as Valencia triumph in La Liga

Valencia ended Real Madrid's winning streak two shy of the world record as they came from behind to win 2-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead with an early penalty, but Valencia turned the match on its head with goals from Antonio Barragan and Nicolas Otamendi early in the second half.

Madrid were hunting a 23rd straight win as they closed in on Coritiba's world record of 24 in a row, but Valencia's impressive home record -- only Barcelona have won at the Mestalla this season -- proved their undoing.

Passions were raised early on, with Gareth Bale coming in for some rough treatment from Valencia.

The Welshman was fouled on the wing after 11 minutes, and the resulting free-kick was flicked on before striking Alvaro Negredo on the arm. It was a case of ball-to-hand but the referee pointed to the spot and Ronaldo once again made no mistake with his penalty kick.

The tough tackling would continue - by the end of the evening Valencia had six players booked - but the first caution came in bizarre circumstances, with Jose Gaya replacing the injured Pablo Piatti and booked for entering the pitch without permission, despite having apparently been waved on by the fourth official.

Madrid continued to push and were desperately close to a second when Ronaldo nipped in front of the goalkeeper only to fire into the side-netting from a tight angle. Bale was appealing for a penalty with the ball appearing to strike Lucas Orban's arm on the way through.

Tempers continued to flare and Valencia wanted a second yellow card for Sergio Ramos for a rough challenge on Negredo 10 minutes before the break.

Valencia had two big chances before half-time, but Barragan's curling effort was deflected off Pepe's back for a corner before another deflection left Iker Casillas standing as Andre Gomes's shot came back off the upright, but the goalkeeper sprang into action to deny Paco Alcacer on the rebound.

Having earned five yellow cards in the first half, Valencia channelled their passions after the break and were level seven minutes in.

Gaya made a superb driving run towards goal before laying it off to Barragan, whose shot found the net with the help of another deflection in the 53rd minute.

Otamendi then made two huge interventions, the first a last-gasp challenge which denied Bale what appeared a certain goal before the hour mark, and the second a towering header to send Dani Parejo's corner into the net in the 66th minute.

It should have been 3-1 moments later as Valencia strung together a brilliant passing move, but with the hard work done, Barragan poked wide when one-on-one with Casillas.

Madrid tried to make them pay, but Ronaldo missed chances late on, including a superb save from Diego Alves at point-blank range.

I do not trust Luis Enrique

I do not trust Luis Enrique

Trust is essential to relationships. It is something that is not easy to earn and something that should not be given away cheaply. “In Fergie/Arsenè/Pep/Carlo/whoever We Trust” is one of football’s most common stadium banners – a fan base expressing their faith in said leader on the basis of trust. I don’t trust Luis Enrique, and frankly nobody else should either. Let me be clear, this does not mean I am advocating for his dismissal or further demonizing the near satanic reputation of the board many relish in perpetuating in appointing him. I don’t trust Luis Enrique because he has given me no reason to.

Contrary to common belief, Luis Enrique is not a Barça man. He was born and schooled in football in Gijón, spent five years at Real Madrid and then made his name over his final eight seasons as a professional player at Camp Nou. These were not utopian times at FC Barcelona either, nothing like the golden era the majority of Barça nation now expect as the norm. Lucho worked under seven mangers in those eight seasons. The club had no clear philosophy and existed in a constant current of volatility and mostly mediocrity. So that Luis Enrique has that innate understanding of Barça in the mold of a Xavi Hernández is rubbish. I’m not stating this as either positive or negative, but it is a myth that needs to be busted once and for all.

He certainly learnt a great deal about the foundations of the academy during his three seasons with the B team, though that still does not equate him to a Tito Vilanova, an uncompromising disciple of the Barça bible. And for all his success with the reserves (of which two seasons were in the third division where even Barça B’s resources dwarves the competition), his win percentage stands at 48.3%, which aside from the season in progress remains his career best. His one season in Rome, during which people are likely unaware the club sanctioned 90 million euros in gross (64 million net) spending, yielded a 42.1% win ratio. Judging his performance at a club like Celta in a league like La Liga is more nuanced, but the fact is he lost more games than he won (17>14) and left Galicia with a 36.8% win ratio.

Being one of the two best league sides in Spain and qualifying in the Champions League are the bare minimum for any Barça manager afforded a luxury of riches few can dream of. I held my fingers for the first half of the season because I believe in affording people time. I set until the turning of the year as my grace period, which is arguably arbitrary, though I do feel its sufficient time for someone to have set foundations and begun to assemble a recognizable vision, particularly so with a core group of players that are so incredibly established. Maybe I’m the fool, but I don’t see one. In the four matches of consequence this season, a Luis Enrique led Barça lost in Paris, got run over in Madrid, should never have beaten Valencia and then unconvincingly beat Paris on the return.

Tonight Luis Enrique decided to bench Barça’s best attacking performers on a ground without a Barça win since Frank Rijkaard, a ground La Real have beaten Barça when ahead at the half every single time in its history (@MisterChip). What that equates to is Real Sociedad being one of the very few sides in Spain who do not quake in their boots when Barcelona strolls into town. That was crystal clear once again tonight. The blaugrana have just lost their first New Year match since 2005 (@MisterChip) at a stadium everyone else seemed to know spelled danger. And all that on a night when Real Madrid finally lost and presented Luis Enrique with a rare opportunity to close the gap and apply pressure. Unlike for B-Rabbit, this won’t be Luis Enrique’s/Barça’s one opportunity, still, I ask, “Would you capture it or just let it slip?”

Luis Enrique is young and experienced. That’s fine – everybody is by nature so at one point. But I do not trust in Luis Enrique. He has not earned it and has a hell of a lot to prove before I will voice, or anyone should even consider voicing, “In Lucho We Trust.”

Arsenal ease into fourth round at Hull’s expense

Arsenal ease into fourth round at Hull’s expense

FA Cup third round, Emirates Stadium – Arsenal 2 (Mertesacker 20 Sanchez 82) Hull City 0
Arsenal eased into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over Hull City in a repeat of the 2014 final. Per Mertesacker headed the defending champions in front in a one-sided opening period which saw the hosts waste a host of opportunities. An improved Hull dictated play for long spells after the restart, but were unable to create a clear-cut opening as stand-in stopper David Ospina enjoyed a comfortable outing in the Arsenal goal. And the Gunners wrapped up victory in the 82nd minute through Alexis Sanchez, who swivelled expertly on the edge of the penalty area before firing home a fine effort. The result ensured Arsenal’s place in the fourth round draw for the 19th successive season and left Hull contemplating how to secure Premier League survival.

KEY MOMENTS PRE-MATCH: Walcott starts. Theo Walcott makes his first Arsenal start in exactly a year.

4’ – CHANCE! Sanchez with a lovely through-ball for Campbell and the forward sees his low effort kept out by Harper. Clever one-two between the Arsenal men.

15’ – OPENING FOR HULL! Former Inter Milan target Tom Ince weaves off the right touchline and fires a low shot into the side-netting.

20’ – GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Hull. Mertesacker fixes his gaze on the ball, wanders to the edge of the six-yard box, and rises above everyone to head home the opener. Simple as you like.

22’ – CHANCE! Rosicky squirms through the Hull defence before slipping a cute pass into the path of Sanchez. The Chilean does well to round Steve Harper, but is surprised to see McShane - yep, him again - slide across the turf to magnificently clear his goalbound shot away.

Arsenal ease into fourth round at Hull’s expense

23’ – ALMOST AN OWN GOAL! The resulting corner hits a Hull player, rebounds off Harper and hits the post. Huge let-off for the visitors.

66’ – WHAT A TACKLE! Maguire dives in to make a stunning challenge to prevent Sanchez scoring from close range.

67’ - HUGE CHANCE! Walcott inexplicably lifts the ball wide of goal after being played through on goal. Has to score.

74’ – CLOSE! Sanchez weaves across the penalty area, but inadvertently prods the ball with his standing leg as he's about to pull the trigger. Harper rushes off his line to save.

82’ – GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Hull. Sanchez swivels with ease on the edge of the Hull box, and guides a fine shot into the bottom corner. Game over. KEY STATS Alexis Sanchez has now scored 16 goals in all competitions this season. Only Sergio Aguero (19) and Harry Kane (17) have more Per Mertesacker's last two goals for Arsenal have come in the FA Cup

TALKING POINT Is the FA Cup enough to appease Arsenal fans? The Emirates faithful were rightly relieved when their side ended a nine-year trophy drought by clinching the FA Cup in 2014, but surely they won’t be as accepting this time around. While the Premier League title is probably out of reach already, a favourable Champions League draw against Monaco suggests Arsenal should probably be focusing on European honours instead.

MAN OF THE MATCH Santi Cazorla (Arsenal): Alexis Sanchez will take the plaudits for another tireless display, but it was the Spaniard’s probing play that repeatedly opened up the Hull defence.

PLAYER RATINGS
 Arsenal: Ospina 7, Bellerin 6, Chambers 6, Mertesacker 7, Monreal 6, Coquelin 6, Rosicky 7, Cazorla 8, Walcott 6, Campbell 5, Sanchez 7.

David Moyes enjoys famous win over Barcelona

David Moyes enjoys famous win over Barcelona

La Liga, Anoeta - Real Sociedad 1dad (Alba og 2) Barcelona 0
Barcelona failed to make the most of Real Madrid’s slip-up against Valencia, suffering defeat themselves to David Moyes’ Real Sociedad side. Luis Enrique made a number of surprise selections, with both Lionel Messi and Neymar left out of the starting line-up as the Barca boss looked to freshen up his team, but the decision backfired almost immediately when Jordi Alba headed into his own goal within three minutes. The Catalans struggled to find any sort of rhythm in the first half, with Luis Suarez toiling due to a lack of service from those around him. And with Real Sociedad holding form chances were at a premium for Barcelona. Messi was introduced at the break, replacing Munir El Haddadi who made scant impression in the first half, but not even Barcelona’s talismanic number 10 could spark their ailing frontline into life. However, Neymar - who was also introduced in the second half - had grounds to feel aggrieved in stoppage time, when he was penalised for kicking the ball from goalkeeper’s Geronimo Rulli’s hands.

But the Sociedad number one looked to have thrown the ball cleanly into the air, meaning the goal he subsequently scored should have stood. Just two points now separate the top three teams in La Liga following Real Madrid’s defeat and Atletico Madrid’s victory over Levante on Saturday, with the Spanish title race tightening after the winter break. Meanwhile, Moyes was left to savour one of the most famous nights of his career as he produced a response to his many critics.

David Moyes enjoys famous win over Barcelona

KEY EVENTS 3’ - GOAL! Real Sociedad 1 Barcelona 0: What a start for Sociedad! Prieto's cross from the left side is headed into his own net by Alba. Sociedad have the lead!

22’ - XAVI FREE-KICK: That wasn't too far away! Xavi lines up the freekick from about 20 yards out, curling his shot towards goal. But his effort flashes over the crossbar, with Rulli scrambling to reach it.

34’ - PENALTY CLAIM: Was that a penalty kick? Inigo's arm looked to be outstretched when Pedro's cross came into the box, but the referee shakes his head, much to Barcelona's anger. That looked to be a handball, for sure.

61’ - PRIETO HEADER: Real Sociedad come very close to doubling their lead! De La Bella swings an excellent ball into the box, with Bravo getting underneath it. Prieto rises highest but heads just over the bar.

63’ - NEYMAR CHANCE: Huge chance for Barcelona! Neymar dribbles the ball into the path of Messi, who seemed to create a shooting chance out of nothing, but Inigo makes a crucial last ditch challenge.

86’ - RULLI TO THE RESCUE: Great intervention from Rulli in the Real Sociedad goal! Suarez breaks through and tries to round the keeper but he gets there first to make an interception to stop the Barca striker.

87’ - RULLI SAVE: And now a huge save from Rulli! Suarez heads towards goal from close range, forcing the Real Sociedad keeper into a stop, pushing the ball high into the air. Great stop from the youngster.

93’ - NEYMAR DISALLOWED GOAL: Right at the end of the game Real Sociedad are let off! Neymar nicks the ball from Rulli after the goalkeeper had thrown it into the air to kick it, but the Brazilian is penalised when his goal should have stood!

David Moyes enjoys famous win over Barcelona

KEY STATS Real Sociedad are the first team to win in Liga home games against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the same season since Sevilla in the 2006/07 season. With two, Jordi Alba has scored more own goals than any other player in La Liga this season.

TALKING POINT How will Luis Enrique explain his baffling team selection? When the Barcelona team sheet was submitted two players were notable in their absence: Messi and Neymar. The former spent the winter break flying to South America and Japan for marketing purposes, so was Enrique punishing Messi? If he was, the Barca boss cut off his nose to spite his face. His selection will be ruthlessly picked apart in the Catalan press.

MAN OF THE MATCH Inigo Martinez (Real Sociedad): The centre-back has been a mainstay of the Real Sociedad team for so long, it’s easy to forget that he’s only 23. And this was one of Martinez’s best performances for the club, dealing with everything Europe’s most dangerous frontline threw at him all game. He was impressive in the air, his man-marking was impressive and was impressive in bringing the ball out of defence too.

Moyes: My Sociedad strugglers can beat Barcelona

Moyes: My Sociedad strugglers can beat Barcelona

Real Sociedad coach David Moyes faces his biggest La Liga challenge yet when second-placed Barcelona visit on Sunday.
The former Manchester United manager took charge of the relegation-threatened club in November. Since then they have lost only once but also have just one victory from five league matches. Moyes wants to win a place in Europe next season although Sociedad are down in 14th place, two points off the relegation zone. The Basque club have proved this season they can rise to the occasion against stronger sides, having beaten Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at home before Moyes took over. Barca also have a poor record in Sociedad where they have not won in the last four visits. They lost there last season. "If we can play as well as we did in those two games (against Real and Atletico) we have a good chance of winning," Moyes told a news conference on Friday. "We face a very good team who are very competitive but the players have shown they can beat Barcelona and they need to do it again. "We want to have a great start to the New Year and beat Barca and do all we can to start moving up the table," said Moyes. "I know the Barcelona players from when I was in England. I watched them play the 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United at Wembley. They are a great team and (Lionel) Messi is very special but they have household names in all positions." While Sociedad have looked more solid at the back in recent games, it has come at a price as they are struggling to create chances going forward. "We will go out looking to be hard to beat and then when we have the ball we will look to cause Barcelona damage," said Moyes. "They are undoubtedly a very good side and we respect that but they have to come to Anoeta and we need to make it difficult for them."

Thierry Henry retires from football

Arsenal and Barcelona legend Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football.
The 37-year-old made his announcement via his Facebook page, bringing down the curtain on a 20-year career during which he became one of the world's most feared - and most loved - strikers. During his career he was part of the French World Cup and European Championship-winning squads of 1998 and 2000, and won league titles with Monaco, Arsenal and Barcelona - also winning three FA Cups with the Gunners and a Champions League title with Barcelona. His most recent club was the New York Red Bulls, who he joined in 2010 and helped to the MLS Eastern Conference title twice. On Monday he confirmed he would not return for the new season, and on Tuesday morning he confirmed that rather than take up another playing role he will become a TV football pundit with Sky. "After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football," his statement said.

"It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special." Henry will always be most closely associated with Arsenal, where he is the all-time goalscorer with 228 goals in 377 games across two different spells. [WENGER: HENRY WILL 'CERTAINLY' COME BACK TO ARSENAL] Arsene Wenger, who had known him as a young player at Monaco, signed him from Juventus for £11 million in 1999, and immediately shifted him from the wing to a central striking position. His blend of pace and power made him one of the most feared forwards in English football, and Henry won the Premier League title twice with the Gunners, as well as the FA Cup three times.

Henry left Arsenal in 2007 and joined Barcelona, where he won the Champions League in 2009. He also added two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to his honours list in three seasons at the Nou Camp. His medal collection also includes a Ligue 1 title and Trophee des Champions with Monaco, his first professional club. He spent the final five years of his playing career with the Red Bulls, returning to Arsenal to make four appearances on loan in early 2012.

With France, Henry scored 51 goals in 123 appearances - only Lilian Thuram has more caps with Les Bleus. He was a member of the 1998 World Cup winning squad, while also being a runner up in 2006. Henry was a European champion in 2000 and was part of the team that won the Confederations Cup in 2003.

Henry added that he will take up a role as a TV pundit - no surprise, given his hugely popular appearances on British television during the World Cup. "It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports. I will hopefully share some of the insights, observations and experiences I have learnt over the years with you guys. "I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience. I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part. See you on the other side..."

Paper Round: Gareth Bale set for Premier League return

Gareth Bale could be set for a Premier League return, whilst Real Madrid target a Chelsea star as his replacement. That and the rest of today's gossip from the newspapers.
Manchester United want Gareth Bale: Real Madrid are willing to sell the world’s most expensive player, Gareth Bale, to Manchester United in the hope of signing Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling, according to a report in the Daily Star. In recent weeks, speculation has surrounded Bale, linking him with a move back to the Premier League amid suggestions that Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is unhappy with the former Tottenham star. The reigning European champions have ruled out selling Bale in weeks gone by, but, according to the Star, sources in Spain suggest that is no longer the case and that Louis van Gaal’s side will offer Real a staggering £90 million to acquire his services. Paper round’s view: So, according to the Star, Real Madrid want Eden Hazard AND Raheem Sterling? And to turf out Gareth Bale? Bold claims, unsupported by anything more concrete than "sources in Spain". Transfer stories don't always need a quote or named source to be credible - in fact, some of the most reliable tips come from an unnamed mole at a club. But this just seems fanciful. While it is true that Real Madrid do like Hazard and Sterling, that doesn't mean they'll definitely sign both. Hazard still has two and a half years to run on his contract at Chelsea, and is closing in on a new deal worth £200,000-a-week. Sterling's future does genuinely seem to be more in the balance - though let's hope Real didn't see his wasteful finishing against Manchester United on Sunday. As for Bale, he is a key part of a team that has won 20 consecutive matches, and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final. So there doesn't seem like much to recommend this story.

Gerard Houllier hoping to take Steven Gerrard to New York Red Bulls: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be offered a contract with MLS club New York Red Bulls should he opt not to sign a new deal with the Reds, according to the Mirror. “Gerrard has been at the centre of much speculation about his future, as Brendan Rodgers has opted to leave him out of the Reds' starting eleven in numerous occasions this season. And now the MLS club, who are now competing against city rivals New York City FC, have included the former England captain on their 'discovery list',” says the report.
Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is currently the sporting director at New York Red Bulls and will be hoping to take advantage of his strong relationship with Gerrard to lure the former England skipper to America. Paper round’s view: It remains to be seen whether Gerrard will sign a new deal with Liverpool, but, even though he has been dropped in recent weeks, we think that the skipper will be playing for the Reds for at least one more season. However, if the 34-year-old opted not to extend his stay at his boyhood club, then it’s hard to see him playing for another Premier League side. A move to the MLS would surely be lucrative, but Gerrard may feel he has a little more to offer…

Man City to swoop for Mats Hummels: Manchester City are set to poach Manchester United and Arsenal target Mats Hummels, and will hope to sign the German in the January transfer window, so says the Express. Following another injury to captain Vincent Kompany and rumours linking Matija Nastasic with a move to Inter Milan, manager Manuel Pellegrini will look to Hummels to shore up the Premier League champions’ defence. The Express report that City will offer Borussia Dortmund £47 million to secure his signature. Paper round’s view: It seems that every top club in Europe has been linked with Mats Hummels at some point in the last couple of seasons. But, as of yet, the highly-rated defender has failed to be persuaded to leave Dortmund. However, with Juergen Klopp’s side enduring a torrid time in the Bundesliga this season – currently sitting in the bottom three – the 25-year-old may finally look to continue his career elsewhere.

Man United set for battle to keep Adnan Januzaj: Inter Milan and Real Sociedad are reportedly both vying for the signature of Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj, according to the Daily Star. “The midfield ace is set to leave Old Trafford in January, as boss Louis van Gaal attempts to secure more first-team action for the talented 19-year-old. New Inter boss Roberto Mancini is thought to be in the market for a wide attacker as he seeks to freshen up his squad at the San Siro. Real chief David Moyes handed the Belgium international his debut during his brief spell in charge at United, and is understood to be keen on a reunion in January,” claims the report in the British newspaper. Paper round’s view: Adnan Januzaj will certainly leave United on a loan deal in January. Van Gaal is reportedly very keen on the Belgian getting more playing time, seeing the 19-year-old as one for the future. Quite where he will end up is so far unclear. But the winger may be keen on playing for David Moyes, whom he built a strong relationship with during the Scot’s ill-fated 10 months in charge at Old Trafford.

Villarreal hand Atletico Madrid first Liga home defeat of 2014

La Liga, Vicente Calderon - Atletico Madrid 0 Villarreal 1 (Vietto 84)

Atletico Madrid’s 27-game unbeaten home run in La Liga came to an end as Diego Simeone’s side suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Villarreal.
The result leaves Atleti seven points adrift of Liga leaders and rivals Real Madrid, with Simeone’s men missing the chance to draw level with Barcelona, who were held by Getafe on Saturday, and suffering their first home defeat of 2014.

Villarreal were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty kick on the stroke of half time, with Gabi Fernandez clearly playing the ball with his arm as the away side looked to create a chance in the box. Mario Mandzukic had a goal harshly chalked off in the second half for a foul at the back post, ruling out his header from an Arda Turan cross.

However, Luciano Vietto struck the decisive blow with just six minutes left to play, breaking through the Atletico backline to finish calmly past Miguel Moya. Receiving the ball in the centre of the Atletico half, he cut inside Diego Godin, leaving the experienced Uruguay centre back flailing, and cracked a fierce drive past Moya in the home goal. Not only did former Atletico goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, who joined the Yellow Submarine after playing second fiddle to David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois, keep a clean sheet against his old club but match-winner Vietto was handed his senior debut by Simeone at Racing Club three years ago at the age of 17.

Vietto said after the match he was "eternally thankful" to Simeone for giving him his chance in Argentina." He trusted me. To debut as a professional is the most important moment for a player and I will be thankful for the rest of my life," he said. "We are very pleased with the performance and the result." "I'm very pleased because we've just beaten one of the best teams in Europe," Villarreal coach Marcelino told reporters after the match. "My players earned a well-deserved victory over a great side.

We've played well in other matches without winning. "We were able to obtain good results against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla but lacked the accuracy we had today in previous games. "I'm happy for the players as they're showing themselves to be a competitive team. Atletico started very strongly, but the game balanced itself out after the 25th minute. "We started well in the second half and looked to match our opponents. Vietto popped up with the goal which secured us a tremendously-important victory."

Roma conquer 10-man Genoa to keep heat on leaders Juventus

Roma are within a point of Juventus after Radja Nainggolan beat 10-man Genoa despite Eugenio Lamanna saving a penalty on his Serie A debut.

It was third hosting second and the wind was all in Genoa’s sails, unbeaten in over two months. The Giallorossi were fresh from a 2-2 home draw with Sassuolo and midweek Champions League elimination at the hands of Manchester City.

Daniele De Rossi was suspended with Leandro Castan, Federico Balzaretti and Lukasz Skorupski sidelined. The Grifone missed Juraj Kucka, but Nicolas Burdisso returned from his ban. Roma had lost five of their last six trips to Marassi and their fans were barred from this away game, so the crowd was entirely Rossoblu.

Rudi Garcia had to chance to close within a point of Juventus, who were held 1-1 by Sampdoria in the early kick-off. Gervinho pulled back for Adem Ljajic, who tried to pass it on rather than shoot unmarked on the edge of the box.

There were timid Genoa penalty appeals when Davide Astori cut off Stefano Sturaro. Mattia Perin was forced into a desperate double save on Gervinho, then Miralem Pjanic’s follow-up and eventually Ljajic blasted over.

Astori and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa were in the book before the half-hour mark, but the game changed when Perin went sliding in to take down Radja Nainggolan on the counter-attack. The red card and penalty were inevitable.

Eugenio Lamanna came on for his Serie A debut and the 25-year-old’s first ever touch of the ball in the top flight was parrying a Ljajic penalty! Lamanna was alert again to smother a Nainggolan strike, but could do precious little when the Belgium international smacked a sensational scissor-kick volley from the edge of the box on Douglas Maicon’s cross. Genoa were furious, as they wanted play stopped for a blatant Ljajic dive in the build-up, but the referee had let it run.

On the stroke of half-time, Alessandro Matri forced a save out of Morgan De Sanctis on the counter. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini was sent off at half-time for arguing with the referee. Ljajic didn’t get enough power to a Maicon cross, poking it into Lamanna’s arms from six yards. Florenzi’s volley was charged down, but De Sanctis had to intercept a Diego Perotti full-back reaching Andrea Bertolacci from six yards. Gasp threw on striker Mauricio Pinilla for defender Sebastien De Maio in a bid to snatch an equaliser for 10-man Genoa.

Gervinho wasted the chance to double Roma’s lead, as he was one-on-one with Lamanna from a quickly-taken free kick only to fire wide. Perotti turned over the bar after a great first touch, then Florenzi’s effort was deflected for a corner from Gervinho assist. Nicolas Andre Burdisso nodded a free kick over the bar, Pjanic’s strike skimmed the upright and Juan Manuel Iturbe wasted a golden opportunity set up by Florenzi. Genoa thought they had equalised deep into stoppages when a corner was flicked on for Rincon from point-blank range, but he had strayed offside.

Man Utd put three past Liverpool to heap pressure on Brendan Rodgers

Premier League, Old Trafford - Manchester United 3 (Rooney 12, Mata 40, Van Persie 71) Liverpool 0
Manchester United won their sixth Premier League game in a row against their great rivals Liverpool at home with a 3-0 victory that relied on brilliance at both ends of the pitch. The visitors set up to pin their hosts back into their own half with a fluid front three of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho, who threatened David De Gea’s area on a number of occasions with their passing, pace and movement. Yet the third part of this trio failed in his duties to man mark Wayne Rooney just 12 minutes into the game, as the Brazilian playmaker let the United captain lay the ball off to Antonio Valencia down the right before arriving in the box to slot home the opener. Juan Mata then doubled the lead before half-time with a near-post header that should have been ruled out as offside. The Spaniard was on when Ashley Young played in the cross that lead to the chance, but a crucial knockdown by Robin van Persie came as he was ahead of the defensive line. Throughout the game, United looked more interested in attacking their opponents directly rather than control possession and the game, but the quality of their finishing allowed this high-risk game plan to work for Louis van Gaal’s team. Van Persie made it 3-0 on the 70 minute mark as Mata picked him out with a smart pass after Rooney’s shot was parried. De Gea then stepped up again to deny half-time substitute Mario Balotelli on three occasions late on to ensure that he kept his clean sheet intact and United held onto their win. The victory keeps United in third with Liverpool now 10 points behind their fierce North West rivals. While Van Gaal may have answered some of his critics with his bold decisions against the Reds, the pressure will now be on Brendan Rodgers to justify his team’s fall from grace after spending big in the summer as last season’s runners up. Having seen off David Moyes’ Manchester United twice in the league last year, his side’s defeat to their old enemy at Old Trafford has all but confirmed their regression to also-rans.

KEY MOMENTS

7' – PRESSING: Brendan Rodgers' desire for his team to press high and be aggressive appears to be working so far. United are struggling to play the ball out of their own half. They look penned in by the visitors.

12' – CHANCE: United are opened up as Raheem Sterling runs through the left-hand channel to take a shot on goal. The Englishman fires it at De Gea who is able to palm it away. It's a nervy start for United who are trying to play out of the back while Liverpool’s attackers looming over them, denying them time and space. Something has to change soon if they're going to be able to snatch the momentum in this game.

13' – GOAL! Antonio Valencia has showed plenty of skill on the ball down the right so far and now he's set up Wayne Rooney for the opener. The Ecuadorian throws a feint and bursts past Hector Moreno and Joe Allen to send in a sweet ball for his captain to fire a shot down the mouth of Brad Jones who can’t stop it. Rooney burst up through the middle from the centre circle to get into the box and score and after initially starting the move with his pass out wide to Valencia.

23' – CHANCE! Sterling has another chance at the near post on the left against De Gea. His movement is playing havoc with Jones' side of the defence especially in the box. He loses his marker and drops into the channel but the Spanish keeper stands tall and bats another shot away.

40' – GOAL! Juan Mata scores a header at the far post from an Ashley Young cross, which is knocked down by Robin van Persie. The Spaniard's run came from deep as the cross was played in but at the moment the Dutchman headed it down for him, he was well offside. The goal should not have stood.

42' – GOAL! Sterling almost conjures up an instant reply with a header of his own. The forward leaps well, rising above his better built markers, but De Gea catches his attempt with ease. He may not have found the net or much luck so far in front of goal but Sterling has impressed leading the line in the first half for Liverpool.

70'– GOAL! James Wilson is replaced by Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney moves up into a centre-forward role, sprinting free through into space on the left. He attempts a shot but the ball is parried to Juan Mata just outside the area. The Spaniard sees Van Persie to his right and juges his angle of attack to be better suited for a shot, and plays him in. The Dutchman does not let him down and sends shoots the ball in from the right-hand side.

84’ – SAVES! Three saves in as many minutes from David De Gea as Mario Balotelli has a trio of attempts on goal, having finally come alive after arriving on the field at half-time in place of Adam Lallana. He can’t beat the Spaniard however who snatches up all three of his shots.

85’ – CHANCE! Van Persie almost makes it 4-0 with a shot from range that rattles the cross bar. Old Trafford groans. It was a wonderful shot but it just didn't dip enough to turn the score line into a rout.

KEY STATS David De Gea made eight saves throughout the game to deny Raheem Sterling’s best efforts in the first half and the late-game attempts of Mario Balotelli to pull a strike or three back, compared to Brad Jones’ tally of three. United didn’t seem interested in sitting back in possession and played a risky game throughout which would have been utterly undermined regardless of their finishing had their Spaniard shot-stopper failed to keep the visitors at bay.

TALKING POINT Are Manchester United now in the title race? Louis van Gaal’s team are still some way away from running Manchester City and Chelsea close at the top of the table but their victory against Liverpool certainly makes them the leaders of the chasing pack in third. However, given the curve of progress that United are following at present both in terms of results and performances, a continued improvement over Christmas and in the New Year could propel them into the mix for the Premier League title itself. Before that can happen though there is much work to be done to get injured players fit again and fix the team’s defensive balance so that a bad day at the office for De Gea in the future doesn’t automatically lead to defeat.

MAN OF THE MATCH David De Gea (Manchester United): Wayne Roony may have been the box-to-box driving force that knit Van Gaal’s high-risk game plan into a decisive assault on the Liverpool box, but at the other end of the field, David De Gea reigned supreme. The Spaniard was the arch nemesis of Raheem Sterling in the first half, who couldn’t even beat the keeper by trying to dribble around him one-on-one while in the second he saved three shots on target by Mario Balotelli in as many minutes. As referenced above, De Gea made a total of eight saves to keep his clean sheet unmarked and ensure that United’s efficiency up front wasn’t cancelled out by their frailties at the back.

PLAYER RATINGS
